About the CTET exam
Central Teacher Eligibility Test is one of the better-known exams in India. It is administered by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and attracts a large number of candidates each cycle. The exam is held once or twice a year.
Format of the real exam: As notified by CBSE for each cycle. Practising in the same style is the quickest way to remove surprises on exam day, which is exactly why CTET mock tests matter.
CTET eligibility
Senior-secondary or graduation with the Elementary Education diploma or a B.Ed., depending on the paper chosen.
Eligibility rules, age limits and relaxations can change between cycles, so always confirm the details in the latest official notification from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) before you apply.
CTET exam pattern and marking scheme
Paper I (Classes 1-5) and Paper II (Classes 6-8) each have 150 questions for 150 marks in 2 hours 30 minutes, with no negative marking. The qualifying score is 60%.
- Subjects and sections: Child Development & Pedagogy, Language I, Language II, Mathematics and Environmental Studies / Science / Social Studies.
- Mode of the real exam: As notified by CBSE for each cycle.
- Frequency: Once or twice a year.
CTET syllabus: what to study
The CTET syllabus is organised around 5 main areas. Plan your preparation so that every area gets a revision cycle before your first full-length mock test.
- Child Development & Pedagogy: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Language I: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Language II: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Mathematics: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Environmental Studies / Science / Social Studies: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
How to prepare for CTET
A good CTET plan combines concept study, topic-wise practice and regular full-length mock tests. Use the checklist below as a starting point.
- Child Development & Pedagogy is high-scoring and common to both papers.
- Prepare language pedagogy along with the language content.
- As there is no negative marking, attempt every question.
- Analyse every mock test: separate errors into concept gaps, calculation slips and time pressure, and fix one group at a time.
- Keep a short error notebook and revise it weekly, since repeated mistakes cost more marks than new ones.
