About the RRB ALP exam
RRB Assistant Loco Pilot & Technician is one of the better-known exams in India. It is administered by Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) and attracts a large number of candidates each cycle. The exam is held notified periodically.
Format of the real exam: Two computer-based tests plus a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for ALP. Practising in the same style is the quickest way to remove surprises on exam day, which is exactly why RRB ALP mock tests matter.
RRB ALP eligibility
Matriculation with ITI or a diploma/degree in a relevant trade or engineering field, with an age limit of about 18 to 30 years.
Eligibility rules, age limits and relaxations can change between cycles, so always confirm the details in the latest official notification from Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) before you apply.
RRB ALP exam pattern and marking scheme
CBT 1 is a screening test of Mathematics, Reasoning, General Science and Current Affairs. CBT 2 has a basic-sciences-and-engineering Part A and a trade-specific Part B, with one-third negative marking.
- Subjects and sections: Mathematics, Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering and Trade-specific Technical Subjects.
- Mode of the real exam: Two computer-based tests plus a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for ALP.
- Frequency: Notified periodically.
RRB ALP syllabus: what to study
The RRB ALP syllabus is organised around 4 main areas. Plan your preparation so that every area gets a revision cycle before your first full-length mock test.
- Mathematics: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Reasoning: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Basic Science & Engineering: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Trade-specific Technical Subjects: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
How to prepare for RRB ALP
A good RRB ALP plan combines concept study, topic-wise practice and regular full-length mock tests. Use the checklist below as a starting point.
- Revise your ITI or diploma subject with a focus on fundamentals.
- Prepare for the CBAT, which tests perception and aptitude rather than knowledge.
- Practise CBT 2 Part A, since it blends maths and science with engineering drawing.
- Analyse every mock test: separate errors into concept gaps, calculation slips and time pressure, and fix one group at a time.
- Keep a short error notebook and revise it weekly, since repeated mistakes cost more marks than new ones.
