About the NIFT exam
NIFT Entrance Examination (B.Des, B.FTech) is one of the better-known exams in India. It is administered by National Testing Agency on behalf of NIFT and attracts a large number of candidates each cycle. The exam is held once a year.
Format of the real exam: Written Creative Ability Test and a computer-based General Ability Test. Practising in the same style is the quickest way to remove surprises on exam day, which is exactly why NIFT mock tests matter.
NIFT eligibility
Class 12 pass (or equivalent) with the age limit and marks specified in the prospectus.
Eligibility rules, age limits and relaxations can change between cycles, so always confirm the details in the latest official notification from National Testing Agency on behalf of NIFT before you apply.
NIFT exam pattern and marking scheme
B.Des candidates take the Creative Ability Test and the General Ability Test, followed by a Situation Test. B.FTech candidates take the General Ability Test only. The GAT covers quantitative ability, communication, English comprehension, analytical ability and general knowledge.
- Subjects and sections: Creative Ability, Quantitative Ability, Communication & English, Analytical & Logical Ability and General Knowledge & Case Study.
- Mode of the real exam: Written Creative Ability Test and a computer-based General Ability Test.
- Frequency: Once a year.
NIFT syllabus: what to study
The NIFT syllabus is organised around 5 main areas. Plan your preparation so that every area gets a revision cycle before your first full-length mock test.
- Creative Ability: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Quantitative Ability: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Communication & English: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Analytical & Logical Ability: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- General Knowledge & Case Study: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
How to prepare for NIFT
A good NIFT plan combines concept study, topic-wise practice and regular full-length mock tests. Use the checklist below as a starting point.
- Practise drawing, colour use and design thinking for the Creative Ability Test.
- Revise design history, brands and the fashion world for the GK section.
- Work on the Situation Test, which requires a 3D model based on a theme.
- Analyse every mock test: separate errors into concept gaps, calculation slips and time pressure, and fix one group at a time.
- Keep a short error notebook and revise it weekly, since repeated mistakes cost more marks than new ones.
