About the USMLE exam
United States Medical Licensing Examination is one of the better-known exams for study, work or licensing abroad. It is administered by National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and attracts a large number of candidates each cycle. The exam is held year-round by appointment.
Format of the real exam: Computer-based multiple-choice tests at Prometric centres. Practising in the same style is the quickest way to remove surprises on exam day, which is exactly why USMLE mock tests matter.
USMLE eligibility
Medical students or graduates of eligible medical schools, subject to ECFMG certification rules for international graduates.
Eligibility rules, age limits and relaxations can change between cycles, so always confirm the details in the latest official notification from National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) before you apply.

USMLE syllabus: what to study
The USMLE syllabus is organised around 4 main areas. Plan your preparation so that every area gets a revision cycle before your first full-length mock test.
- Basic Sciences: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Clinical Knowledge: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Patient Management: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Biostatistics & Ethics: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
How to prepare for USMLE
A good USMLE plan combines concept study, topic-wise practice and regular full-length mock tests. Use the checklist below as a starting point.
- Use a question bank daily and review the explanations for both right and wrong answers.
- Build a spaced-repetition routine for high-yield facts.
- Take timed blocks of 40 questions to mimic exam conditions.
- Analyse every mock test: separate errors into concept gaps, calculation slips and time pressure, and fix one group at a time.
- Keep a short error notebook and revise it weekly, since repeated mistakes cost more marks than new ones.
