About the TOEIC exam
Test of English for International Communication is one of the better-known exams for study, work or licensing abroad. It is administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS) and attracts a large number of candidates each cycle. The exam is held multiple sessions each year.
Format of the real exam: Paper-based or online. Practising in the same style is the quickest way to remove surprises on exam day, which is exactly why TOEIC mock tests matter.
TOEIC eligibility
No formal eligibility; used for employment and corporate language assessments.
Eligibility rules, age limits and relaxations can change between cycles, so always confirm the details in the latest official notification from Educational Testing Service (ETS) before you apply.
TOEIC exam pattern and marking scheme
The Listening and Reading test has 200 questions in about two hours and a total score of 10 to 990. Separate Speaking and Writing tests are also available.
- Subjects and sections: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.
- Mode of the real exam: Paper-based or online.
- Frequency: Multiple sessions each year.
TOEIC syllabus: what to study
The TOEIC syllabus is organised around 4 main areas. Plan your preparation so that every area gets a revision cycle before your first full-length mock test.
- Listening: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Reading: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Speaking: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
- Writing: revise concepts, practise topic-wise questions, then test yourself under timed conditions.
How to prepare for TOEIC
A good TOEIC plan combines concept study, topic-wise practice and regular full-length mock tests. Use the checklist below as a starting point.
- Practise photographs and short conversation tasks for the Listening section.
- Time yourself on Reading Part 7, which has the longest passages.
- Build business vocabulary through emails, notices and advertisements.
- Analyse every mock test: separate errors into concept gaps, calculation slips and time pressure, and fix one group at a time.
- Keep a short error notebook and revise it weekly, since repeated mistakes cost more marks than new ones.
